“My toddler just won’t listen to me! And don’t even get me started on how they don’t follow directions.”

If I had a dollar for every time I heard a parent navigating the toddler years say this…

Hearing isn’t the same as listening. They hear you, promise.

They are choosing not to do what you want them to do. And this is the big distinction. When you say ‘listen’ you mean ‘do what I want’.

Sometimes, you’ll need to use different words; to use intentional language to get their brain to pay closer attention.

Sometimes, it will be as easy at getting their undivided attention before asking them to take action.

And sometimes, they will just plain refuse and you’ll need an entirely different set of communication strategies.
