Stop Apologizing for Your Child's Behavior. Do this Instead

Toddlers misbehave: at home, in public, at school.

 

They are small humans exploring the world and testing to see who will hold boundaries with love, consistency and compassion, regardless of where they are.

 

As parents, the urge to apologize for their behaviors is strong. But when you consider that they are supposed to be doing this, that it’s a developmentally appropriate way to discover the social norms and ‘rules’ of the world, it changes things.

 

From this perspective, it’s easier to sit confidently inside supportive self talk.

 

I do not need to apologize to friends, family or strangers for my children’s behavior.

 

I’m responsible to my child, to support their early learning.

 

I’m responsible to my child, to hold my boundaries with love, consistency and compassion.

 

You are their model. If you apologize for their choices and behaviors they absorb your ‘sorry’ as an identity marker. 

 

I am bad.
